Finding turf to buy is easy. Finding quality turf for sale is going to be a little bit more difficult. How do you know if it is good quality and will do the job well for your garden, playing field, golf course etc? How do you know if it has been grown in good conditions? Even if it seems to be high quality and green now, will it stay that way?
You must buy turf from a good supplier if you want to get the most out of it. This is your best and safest option for finding turf that will be just right for you. Talk to the retailer or turf grower and ask them about their growing methods, the grass seed varieties used, and how the turf has been maintained.
Look for turf that has a consistent colour and thickness. The grass should be dense and free from weeds, pests, and diseases. Good quality turf will have a well-developed root system that holds together when rolled.
Consider the purpose of the turf. Different grass varieties are suited to different uses – a family lawn will need a hardwearing mix, while an ornamental lawn requires finer grasses. Sports turf has its own specific requirements for drainage and durability.
Timing is also important when buying turf. While turf can be laid at most times of the year, autumn and spring are generally the best seasons. Avoid laying turf during very hot, dry weather or when the ground is frozen.
Once you’ve laid your new turf, water it thoroughly and keep it well-watered for the first few weeks until the roots have established. Avoid heavy foot traffic during this period to give the turf the best chance of success.
